One of my most captivating hobbies is playing Go, a game that has been enjoyed for countless generations. Reflecting upon its design, Go consists of only three elements: black stones, white stones, and lines. While the lines serve as a background, it is the interplay between the black and white stones that takes center stage in this game.
In contrast, chess, another renowned game, also employs black and white pieces, but it encompasses a more intricate set of concepts. With knights, bishops, rooks, and kings, chess incorporates a wealth of complexity beyond simple black and white elements. However, when considering both games from a holistic standpoint, it becomes evident that Go presents a greater challenge than chess. This is where the beauty lies—through its simplicity, Go reveals the entire spectrum of complexity it holds within.
In many ways, our lives can be likened to a game of Go. We navigate through our life's journey, making strategic moves akin to the game. Just as Go encapsulates depth and subtlety beneath its simple appearance, so too do our life experiences encompass profound intricacies.
(Greed leads to failure)
It is quite paradoxical. The one who has the greatest greed actually always fails. Greed has a way of clouding one's judgment and blinding them to important factors, ultimately leading to their downfall. It serves as a cautionary reminder to avoid the pitfalls of excessive greed and embrace a more balanced and mindful approach to success.
(Be unhurried to enter opponent's territory)
When entering the opponent's territory, it is advisable to approach gradually and unhurriedly. By exercising patience and carefully assessing the situation, one can make strategic decisions that maximize their chances of success.
(Take care of oneself when attacking the other)
When launching an attack, it is essential to evaluate one's own weaknesses. By acknowledging and addressing one's vulnerabilities, it becomes possible to mount a more effective and well-rounded offensive strategy.
(Discard a stone to gain sente)
先 is the best wisdom of The Art of War(Sun Tzu). Even if it means sacrificing a stone, prioritize taking sente (initiative) in order to maintain strategic advantage. Sometimes relinquishing a small advantage in the present can lead to greater gains in the future.
(Abandon small to save big)
In the pursuit of larger gains, be willing to let go of smaller, less significant elements. By focusing on the bigger picture and long-term objectives, one can make choices that lead to greater overall success.
(When in danger, sacrifice)
When faced with a precarious situation, it is prudent to make sacrifices to mitigate risks. Sometimes, letting go of certain positions or advantages is necessary to ensure overall stability and security.
(Make thick shape, avoid hasty moves)
Exercise caution and avoid making rash or hurried moves. Prioritize establishing solid and secure positions before pursuing aggressive actions. Thoughtful and deliberate decision-making leads to more favorable outcomes.
(A move must respond to the opponent's)
Respond accordingly and adapt to the opponent's moves. It is crucial to remain flexible and react appropriately to changing circumstances, ensuring strategic alignment with the opponent's actions.
(Against strong positions, play safely)
When facing a strong opponent's positions, exercise caution and adopt defensive strategies. Prioritize safeguarding one's own positions and assets while seeking opportunities to undermine the opponent's strength.
(Look for peace; avoid fighting in an isolated situation)
If your stones are isolated and vulnerable, prioritize seeking peaceful resolutions instead of engaging in unnecessary conflicts. Emphasize harmony and cooperation over confrontations that may lead to disadvantageous outcomes.
Whenever I play the game of Go, I always keep these ten golden rules in my mind. They not only apply to the game itself but also offer valuable insights for navigating life's challenges and decisions.
